>9. The Beginning of Time [Aeon] _From: Aeon III:5 (May 1994) Home | Issue Contents The Beginning of Time Dwardu Cardona _See note * below. If what was postulated in "Darkness and the Deep" (1 ) actually transpired, it would follow that, during the age of darkness there described, man would have had no way of telling time. With an indistinct Saturnian orb half-shielded within a nebular cloud perpetually suspended overhead, and with the Sun, the Moon, and the stars still apparently absent from the sky, there would have been nothing on which ancient man could have focused that would have enabled him to calculate the passage of time. Does man's collective memory have anything to say about such a situation in primeval times? And, if it does, would it not, of itself, serve to confirm the postulate delineated in the earlier paper? In this connection, as in many others, ancient man did not mince words. As was indicated in "The Evolution of the Cosmic Egg," (2 ) the Satapatha Brahmana informs us that while the cosmic egg "floated about for as long as the space of a year," the year, in actuality, "was not then in existence." (3 ) Thus, in the Ugaritic pantheon, El, who was Saturn, "the creator of created things," was also called "the father of the years." (4 ) Not only the year, but time itself was not. As the Malay Charmbook, in its inimitable mixture of Muslim and pagan doctrines, has it stated: In the days when Haze bore Darkness, and Darkness Haze, when the Lord of the Outer Silence Himself was yet in the womb of Creation, before the existence of the names of Earth and Heaven, of God and Muhammad, of the Empyrean and Crystalline spheres, or of Space and Void, the Creator of the entire Universe pre-existed by Himself, and He was the Eldest Magician... Now from before the beginning of time existed that Magician - that is, God... (5 ) Or, as Macrobius tells us: .. .they [i.e., the ancients] ... ) This symbol, a circle with a dot in the center, with which the readers of this journal should be quite familiar, also known to mythologists as "the male seed-point or bindu," (56) was extensively used by the ancient Egyptians as one of their numerous hieroglyphs. It stood, among other things, for the ____Aten which Talbott has long identified as the Saturnian band (57) and which was also equivalent to the cosmic egg as indicated by the laudation of the primeval deity as "you in your egg, shining in your ____Aten." (58) What is, however, of even more interest to the present study is that the same sign was also chosen as a determinative for "time," (59) thus showing that the idea of time was definitely associated with the Saturnian band. Our postulate can additionally be verified through yet another avenue. As I have long indicated, Saturn was eventually encompassed by seven rings. (60) It is therefore interesting to find the Atharva Veda lauding Kala, who was both Saturn and Time, with these words: "With seven wheels does this time [Kala] ride, seven naves has he..." (61) Time, it therefore seems, came into being with the bisecting of this band into two halves or crescents. The crescents were seen to revolve because the Earth, sharing Saturn's axis of rotation, was itself rotating. The above also explains why the festivals of the New Year, touched upon in the preceding paper, were devoted to Saturn in his many guises. Among these festivals were those held in ancient Greece in honor of Dionysus, who is also identifiable as a Saturnian deity. (62) As Marija Gimbutas informed her readers: "In these festivals, which have assimilated elements of deep antiquity, Dionysus appears as a year-god." (63) Even though they were following [SEE CARDONA RE COSMIC EGG]
1. On testing The Polar configuration [Aeon] _Saturn now appears as a bare speck in the sky, we should find, amongst all peoples with adequately preserved planetary traditions, a mysterious association of the enclosed sun with the planet Saturn and the celestial Pole. (39) _4. The ancient sun-god stood in the center of a luminous enclosure. The Egyptian sun god dwells within the ____Aten, whose hieroglyph is the universal symbol of the enclosed sun. (40) The Babylonian Shamash occupies the center of a revolving, wheel-like celestial enclosure. (41) The Hindus celebrated the wheel of the sun god Surya, and in art the god is presented in the center of a fiery wheel - as is also the true sun Brahma
4. RECONSTRUCTING THE SATURN MYTH [Aeon] _, from start to finish, a key to unraveling the mystery of the great father and Golden Age. _The World Wheel _The celestial enclosure produced in the creation appeared as a great turning wheel hanging immense in the sky, with the sun god stationed as the axis or pivot of the revolving circumference. The Egyptians called the great wheel the ____Aten, recorded hieroglyphically by the symbol of the enclosed sun. Among the most common images in the Egyptian lexicon, the ____Aten is also one of the most misrepresented - simply because the sign has no intelligible meaning today. Most Egyptologists translate the ____Aten as "the sun" or as an innocuous "disk of the sun," a horrendous
6. The Evolution of the Cosmogonic Egg [Aeon] _millennia later, easily lent themselves to translation as "heaven" and "earth." Nor is this misunderstanding to be laid entirely at the door of modern mythologists for the ancients themselves, not having witnessed what their more ancient forebears had, eventually fell into the same trap. This can be further substantiated through a study of the Egyptian ____Aten which Talbott has ably demonstrated to have originally stood for the circle, or band, visually seen to surround the primeval Saturn. (171) That the ____Aten was also visualized as an egg is demonstrated by the laudation of the primeval deity as "you in your egg, shining in your ____Aten." (172) As Talbott
7. Mother Goddess and Warrior-Hero (Part One) [Aeon] _Great Flame" they add a third comet glyph to the equation. And though there is much remaining to be said on this story, its conclusion is clear: when the raging serpent was pacified, it had wrapped itself around the sun god as the god's crown, throne or temple, its body now inseparable from the band of the ____Aten. (As in the sign, noted in previous articles.) In the myth of Shu and Tefnut, while Shu is spit out to become the pillar, the goddess Tefnut (whose name Hait preserves her connection to the hat-heart) becomes the sun-enclosing band- the same band which, in the parallel symbolism of other accounts,

"[ He] has made all that exists, From his eyes mankind came forth And the gods from his mouth..." [8 ] The Egyptian creator-sun-god was known by many names: ____Aten, Amen-Ra (Fig. 2), Atum, Ptah and Osiris. First it was Tem/Temu/Atum, then Ra/Re who "usurps the place occupied by the more ancient form Temu, but before the close of the VIth dynasty Osiris had taken his place...as the greatest of the gods.
x3. The Ship of Heaven [Aeon] _sail round heaven like Thoth." (23) While Ra's image is the enclosed sun, the common symbol of Thoth is the crescent-enclosure. Allowing the one image to explain the other, we see that Unas does not here engage in two separate acts, but in a single act depicted in two different ways: to revolve within the ____Aten is to sail in the crescent ship of Thoth. "I stand up in thy enclosure, O Maa; I sail round about," reads the Book of the Dead. (24) From such declarations as this, together with other evidences cited below, it is clear that to enter the sun god's enclosure is to enter
1S. Saturn's Cosmos [Books] ... , the translators will likely ignore the terms or contrive a complicated metaphysical concept to explain them. Though the Egyptian hieroglyph for Re is , and though this sign, taken literally, immediately illuminates the foregoing references, no one seems inclined to take the signor the texts- literally. To the enclosure round the sun the Egyptians gave the name ____Aten, a term familiar to every student of Egyptian religion. "Spacious is your seat within the ____Aten," reads the Coffin Texts. (8 ) One of Re's titles is am aten-f, the dweller in his ____Aten." Both Atum and Horus possess the same title. Similarly, the Book of the Dead invokes Osiris:
1C1. The Crescent [Books] ... this revolving crescent to the phases of the archaic "day" and " night"- as well as to many other aspects of ancient cosmography. But let us take the present line of inquiry a little further. Does the equation of the crescent and enclosure occur also in Egypt? The Egyptians (as previously observed) called the enclosure ____Aten, recorded by the hieroglyph . (In the course of time this symbol evolved into the simplified form , with the enclosed sun dropped out) It is the latter form that generally prevails in later Egyptian art.) In numerous representations of the ____Aten a crescent forms the lower half of the enclosure. In fig 52, I offer

Though the crescent of Sin was the ma-gur boat possessed by Ninurta (Saturn), the sign for gur means "circular enclosure." (25) Is there any direct statement that the enclosure depicted in the sign is the ship's pathway? The Egyptians called the band ____Aten or khu (" glory," "halo"): "Hail to you who sails in his Khu, who navigates a circle within his ____Aten," reads the Book of the Dead. (26) Clearly, the subject is the crescent-enclosure. In the Pyramid Texts, King Unas announces, "I revolve round heaven

Each temple became a miniature of the cosmic habitation founded in the creation

The interrelated terminology identifies the primeval ta, "land," with the enclosure of the central sun . The Egyptians knew that the primeval garden lay within the circle of the ____Aten. (" Thou makest thy creations in thy great ____Aten," reads the Litany of Re.) (18) Thus the Egyptians denoted the garden of Re by combining the ____Aten glyph with the glyph for "garden": . The significance of such imagery seems to have escaped mythologists: the lost "homeland" of global

The Egyptian term for the place of the sun's coming forth is khut, whose literal sense is anything but "horizon." (4 ) The hieroglyph for khut (or ) combines two signs- the Re or ____Aten sign and the sign for "mountain" . (I take up the latter sign in the section on the cleft peak.) Its literal meaning, as noted by Renouf, is "Mount of Glory" and "there is no reason why we should continue to use the misleading term horizon." Literally, the great god

In Egyptian art the Uraeus-Eye is commonly presented in a unique relationship to a red stone or sphere, signifying the sun god's innermost, masculine "heart of carnelian." In this relationship the Uraeus does not look like a sphere but a narrow band. The same form appears in familiar representations of the ____Aten and of the Shen-bond. But in all three instances the common form is a white, gold or turquoise band around a red disk, stone or orb. This red orb never means "goddess." Hiero-glyphically the red disk, the "heart of car-nelian," means the warrior hero, the mas-culine ab-heart of Ra. So

CIRCULARIZATION
Catastrophism and the Mammoths - I (Vox Populi) [Journals] [Kronos] ... 7), p. 730; B. Kurten, op. cit., p. 130. 41. P. Wright, "Mammoth Clue to Prehistoric Mystery," The Times (London, March 2, 1974). SHORT-CIRCUITING A CIRCULARIZATION MODEL To the Editor of KRONOS: Eric Crew suggests that the orbit of Venus was circularized by the slow decline of electrostatic forces between Venus and the Sun (KRONOS X:2 , pp. 13-31). The hypothesis is offered as an alternative to my own hypothesis of circularization by aerodynamic drag (KRONOS VII:2 , pp. 3-28). Crew has developed a very interesting computer program. Unfortunately, several objections can be raised against the input data he has used to support his hypothesis. When estimating the Sun's electric charge, Crew refers to two of his own works, one from 1977, the other from 1981. In the paper from 1977, the only one available to me at the moment, he proves that radiation pressure can yield a maximum voltage gradient of 1.67 x 10^5 V/m (a value reached if all particles have a radius of 0.25 [micro]m and a charge of one electron each). It is surprising, therefore, that Crew now states that a steady state value of 10^2 deg C for the total charge of the Sun "does not seem unreasonable" although this would produce a voltage gradient at the surface of 1.86 x 10^12 V/m. This discrepancy of 7 orders of magnitude requires an explanation. For the body representing Venus (called "the core"), Crew makes the rather artificial assumption that the charge is distributed evenly throughout the body. The general rule is that electric charge always accumulates on the surface. But let us leave aside the question as to how the charge was produced and how it became distributed in such a peculiar way. Supposing that the charge is there, how much time will it take for it to leak away? In his computer simulation, Crew has chosen such input data that the charge will leak away in 40 years time. With a total charge of 5.24 x 10^14 C, the average current over 40 years will be 4.15 x 10^5 A. Venus has a surface area of 4.60 x 10^14 m2, so the average current density would amount to 9.02 x 10^-10 A/m^2. This figure is totally incompatible under the given conditions, or 1.29 x 10^5 MV/m. It would require a material with a resistivity of 1.43 x 10^2 deg ohm-m. This is much higher than the resistivity of any known solid material. Mica, for instance, is an excellent insulator with a resistivity of approximately 10^14 ohm-m at room temperature, yet this is six orders of magnitude lower than the value required to fit Crew's calculations. There is another, more severe objection. The dielectric strength of most insulating materials is not better than 50 MV/m . If the critical voltage gradient is exceeded, breakdown will occur and the insulator will be turned into a conductor. In spite of many years' search for better insulating materials, no solid material has yet been found with a dielectric strength approaching 10^5 MV/m . The best material I have found in the literature is mica which, according to one source, can withstand 300 MV/m at room temperature. The consequence of this is that the charge will leak out to the surface long before Venus has completed one turn around the Sun. Probably, the major part of the charge will be brought to the surface in one violent discharge of 10 seconds duration. When the charge has reached the surface, how long a time would it take for it to leak out into space? 3. Circling the Rings [Journals] [Aeon] ... has important implications. For the school of investigators who believe that Venus is a newcomer to its position in the Solar System, the problem is acute: If Venus originated elsewhere, and moved to its present location only thousands of years ago, how did its new orbit become circular? In 1982, in an attempt to account for the circularization of Venus' orbit, Ragnar Forshuvud proposed a massive cloud circling the Sun, enveloping the whole region of the inner planets. [1 ] To be effective in circularizing Venus' orbit, his calculations mandated a cloud mass implausibly large. His failure derives from the nature of gravitational collision: the effect that one body has in changing the direction of another body depends on the angle between their directions. Forshuvud's cloud would have been effective in the initial phase of contact when Venus had a highly elliptical orbit, and the angle between Venus' orbit and the circular orbit of the cloud was large. As Venus approached its present station, the circularizing action of these collisions would have diminished. Forshuvud's cloud, limited to gravitational interactions, could not have been the agent that reshaped the orbit of Venus. Even less well-known is the second "supposition" of this description of the evolution of the Solar System, namely the concept of parturition by core ejection. It is a concept suggested by FORSHUVUD (1976) as an explanation of the ejection of Venus from Jupiter. All of the theories of planet formation to date have considered either material from the surface of the Sun or material in a nebula surrounding the sun for the simple and "obvious" reason that the planets are on the outside of the Sun. 2. On the circularization of the Orbit of Venus [Journals] [Kronos] __From: Kronos Vol. VII No. 2 (Winter 1982) Ragnar Forshufvud __ABSTRACT. After the Saturn nova outburst that caused the Deluge, a flat cloud of hydrogen gas would have been rotating around the Sun. The aerodynamic drag caused by the hydrogen gas may have changed the orbit of Venus substantially in a period of a few hundred years. This is demonstrated by numerical calculations, using a theoretical model for the gas cloud. The effects of the gas on electric and magnetic fields in space are also discussed. Velikovsky's reconstruction of ancient astronomical events requires that the orbit of Venus, originally elliptic like that of a comet of the Jovian family, became circular in a period of a few thousand years. Most astronomers refuse to believe that such a thing is possible. For a bibliography of works dealing with the problem (1977 and older), see Ref. 1. A more recent contribution to the discussion was written by Sherrerd.(2 ) The problem of orbit circularization does not concern catastrophist astronomy only. According to some theorists, ____several satellites of the large planets are in fact captured asteroids which succeeded, after being captured, in achieving approximately circular orbits. The Moon may also be a captured body- no really satisfactory theory has been found for the existence of a satellite to the Earth, the difficulty with the capture theory being the circularization problem. The extra difficulty which meets the catastrophist is that the time scale is so short. Some of the oldest traditions refer to a time when there was no Moon.(3 ) This indicates that the Moon was captured comparatively recently. Furthermore, Velikovsky has suggested that the Earth was once a satellite of Saturn. This seems to be the only way to explain certain parts of the oldest myths, but it leaves us with another circularization problem: how did the Earth get its circular orbit, after it had left the gravitational field of Saturn? In most of the circularization literature, the problem is discussed in general terms without quantitative analysis. An exception is the comprehensive treatment done by Rose and Vaughan.(4 ) In their interesting article, the authors specified the theoretical problems of Velikovsky's reconstruction: large amounts of energy and angular momentum seem to have disappeared mysteriously from the solar system. They estimated the total loss of energy since Venus left Jupiter at just below 10^40 ergs, or 10^33 joules, of which about 40 percent was lost before the Exodus, and the rest afterwards. If all this energy had
